Baynunah, United Arab Emirates

7.5 - 6.5 Ma

The Baynunah Formation, located in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi Emirate, United Arab Emirates, is the single known set of deposits in the whole of the Arabian Peninsula from which terrestrial fossil vertebrates are known. There are no datable layers in the Baynunah from which to extract a direct date, but the animals found suggest an age of 7.5 and 6.5 million years old. The Baynunah fossils provide evidence of the existence of rivers and tropical animals such as hippopotamus, crocodile, proboscideans, sabre-tooth lions, and large giraffids in what is today a hyperarid region.
